ANSYS Multi field 2-way FSI data coupling issue

      Hey Everyone,

I’ve ran into an issue on a 2-way fsi research project and I believe I’m either missing a setting or an extension.  A few months ago the simulation worked perfectly but we have since updated the software from 19.0 to 19.1 and now I’m getting the following error code.  “An FSI data link was set in Workbench, but the 'External Solver Coupling' option in 'Flow Analysis 1' is no longer 'ANSYS MultiField'.”  When I’m setting up the simulation in CFX, under analysis settings, I’m normally able to select the ANSYS multifield option but now it does not show it available.

Has anyone experienced this or have guidance?

      Thank you

Hi. If you check Section 2.3 of the R19.1 release documentation it's noted that the functionality has been superseded by System Coupling. There's a link there to the System Coupling notes there too.

Great! Thank you for the help.  I've searched online for the R19.1 Release documents and cant find it.  Do you have a link by any chance?

Does anyone have a good resource for setting up the new system coupling?  I keep getting the following error.

I'm working on a 2way fsi problem with transient structural and CFX

There's a link from the release notes, where it says the older method has been superseded.  You get to the documentation using the help feature in the software: that also changed at R19.  Otherwise there's YouTube if the wider community can't help; as ANSYS staff we're not able to review projects.

      Hello,

As you mentioned there is a limitation in R19.1 ANSYS version that does not allow coupling systems using ANSYS Multifield. Details are explained in two links that do not work. Could you please suggest me another reference?

Here is the link to the documentation: http://storage.ansys.com/doc_assets/release_notes/Release_Notes_190.pdf

      Hi,

Please see the System Coupling Tutorial: Oscillating Plate FSI with CFX and Mechanical

A version of this tutorial showing how to run System Coupling outside of Workbench is also available here: https://ansyshelp.ansys.com/account/secured?returnurl=/Views/Secured/corp/v201/en/sysc_tut/sysc_tut_oscplate_cli_cfx.html

Thanks for providing references. Do you think I can get access to the Ansys customer portal as a student? Since it seems I need to have a user pass on that page.

      Hi,

My apologies, I didn't provide details. A login to the customer portal isn't needed to view the ANSYS Help. To view the ANSYS Help, launch "ANSYS Help 19.1" from the Windows start menu, or launch Help > Contents from CFX. Once you have the online help open, you'll be able to use the links I sent which will bring you to the System Coupling section.

      Hello,

My FSI model contains two solids and a thin layer of fluid flow between these two. As the applied load is too high, the run corrupts when it comes to sending the results to fluid after 150 iterations and Ansys Interface Loads is not generated. It seems that the elements merge near the interfaces! I have increased the mesh stiffness in CFX near small volumes and also in the contact section of Steady Structural, but it did not work. It is worthy to note that by decreasing the magnitude of applied load to 1000 times smaller, the run successfully continues until the results are converged. Could you advise me is there any way to change the setup for this amount of load and how can I can get the solution?

If the two solids are intersecting you can add an offset in Mechanical by adding a Contact. This will prevent the solids from intersecting. More on that here: https://ansysproducthelpdev.win.ansys.com/account/secured?returnurl=/Views/Secured/corp/v202/en/wb_sim/ds_geometric_correction.html?q=%22geometric%20modification%22%20offset
